and if, like me, you think that it's wrong, and / or the UK taxpayer footing the bill for the Pope's upcoming visit to the UK is wrong in the light of this or any number of his less than tolerant pronouncements in the last couple of years, then please go here and sign the petition against his visit.

The pedition isn't doing a single thing but at least we can show numbers. WTF is the Pope doing trying to interfere with legislation, anyway?
As you say, secular staff should be subject to secular rules and regulations and the only consideration should be their ability to do their job.
