As some of you know I had a little "adventure" this week...

On Tuesday evening I was riding my usual route back from the office to Paddington, and as I got to the end of the Strand the lights were in my favour and so I was riding around the bottom of Trafalgar Square heading for Admiralty Arch at full tilt in top gear. I was indicating so that those behind me would not be bemused by my movements, so I only had one hand on the handlebars, and I was watching the black cab in front of me, scared to ride into him if he hit the brakes...

And so it was that I hit a bump in the road, and the last thing that I remember was leaving the bike behind. I woke up in the road, dazed and being watched over by two very kindly pedestrians and an equally kindly fellow cyclist who had stood his bike up in the road to protect me from the traffic. Apparently I was out for the best part of a minute; all I can say is thank heavens for helmets or I might not b typing this entry, albeit one-handed... Yep I did do myself some damage, I broke my left collarbone, here have a look;

So I'm going to be in a sling for a few weeks, but having been to the fracture clinic at Reading Hospital I am a lot more optimistic, and more to the point my fears at not being able to take my holiday have been set to rest - I am still going to Canada and the States for most of October, and I can't wait to get on that plane...

Between now and then there are still some hills to climb vis à vis work and this little "adventure" has put me somewhat behind, but I know I'll get there, and I have to say that work have been very supportive and understanding too, so I know it will all come right in the end.

I have only these things to say:

  1. If you're going to ride a bike, wear a helmet - what happened to me can happen to anyone no matter their skill, experience or equipment, and without a helmet I'd be lucky not to still be unconscious now.

  2. Hooray for the NHS - I was rescued from the London streets, excellently cared for and sent on my way with painkillers and good advice and I did not have to have my insurance details on me, or fill in any forms or worry about the bill coming in 4 weeks.

  3. Thankyou for all the wonderful support I have received from my family and friends; the care and concern you have all shown and the help you have rendered to me is humbling and I am incredibly thankful for it.

Y'all have a great weekend now - I have some rather excellent painkillers awaiting my company ;-)
